How to Select the Right Threaded Connection Coupler

Let me be upfront—picking a hydraulic quick coupling isn't rocket science, but it's easy to get it wrong. Order the wrong thread, guess the size, or ignore your pressure needs, and suddenly your "quick" solution turns into a leaky headache.

Step 1: Know what you're actually connecting.

Most people jump straight to thread size. Don't. First, figure out the coupling type you need. The Screw Couplings family includes ball-type (quick but can wear), flat-face (clean but pricier), andthread locked quick couplerdesigns. If you're dealing with vibration, high pressure, or frequent connect/disconnect cycles, a Screw-To-Connect Coupler is your safest bet—it physically locks via threads, no accidental pop-offs.

Our TGW series uses a threaded sleeve locking mechanism that mates with external fitting threads. You tighten it by hand about half a turn, and it stays put. No tools, no drama.

Step 2: Match the thread. This is where people mess up.

Nothing kills a project faster than a 3/4" NPT hose trying to connect to a G 3/4 BSP coupling. They look similar. They are not the same.

Common thread types you'll run into:

  • NPT (National Pipe Tapered) – common in North America, seals by thread interference
  • BSPP (G thread) – parallel threads, seals with an O-ring or washer
  • JIC (37° flare) – metal-to-metal seal, handles high pressure well
  • Metric – straight or tapered, common in European and Asian machinery

Step 3: Size it by flow, not by hose OD.

This is the most common mistake. A 1/2" hose doesn't necessarily need a 1/2" coupling. Quick Couplings should be sized based on flow capacity, not thread size on your hose. Undersize it, and you'll get pressure drop and heat buildup. Oversize it, and it may not fit physically.

Check the internal flow diameter. For most general hydraulic applications, 1/4" to 1" covers it. Our TGW line runs from TGW-02 (1/4") up to TGW-08 (1").

Step 4: Look at construction.

Step 5: Check compatibility.

A quick word on hydraulic quick coupler types in general

Not all hydraulic quick coupler types are created equal. Push-to-connect is fast but can disconnect accidentally. Flat-face is clean but bulkier. Threaded connection couplers trade a couple extra seconds of connection time for rock-solid reliability.

For heavy equipment, construction machinery, and any application where a sudden disconnect would be dangerous, threaded is the way to go.
