Hydraulic Ball Valve Selection for Mobile & Heavy Equipment: KHB vs KHB3K vs Threaded Alternatives
A ball valve looks simple — turn the handle, flow stops or starts. On a 30-ton excavator or a mining truck hydraulic circuit, that simplicity is exactly what you want, and exactly what can go wrong if the valve is spec'd for the wrong duty. We build KHB-series high-pressure ball valves on the SAE J518C flange interface and ship them into excavator, tractor and mining applications, so this is about real selection, not a brochure.
What "KHB" actually refers to
KHB is the common industry name for a high-pressure ball valve built around the SAE J518C four-bolt flange (or matching threaded) interface, with a working pressure around 500 bar on the smaller sizes and a full-bore flow path. The point of the design is a ball that opens to essentially the same diameter as the pipe, so pressure drop is minimal, and a bidirectional seal that does not care which way the media flows. That last part matters in mobile equipment where the same line can be supply or return depending on the cycle.
Our KHB range covers a wide port matrix: metric threaded (M12×1.25 through M72×2), ISO 228 parallel (G1/8 through G2), NPT (1/8 NPT through 2 NPT) and SAE J514 (SAE4 through SAE32). That breadth is the practical reason buyers come to a manufacturer rather than a general distributor — the port you need is usually a combination a catalog house does not stock.
KHB vs KHB3K: same family, different job
The plain KHB is a two-way shut-off — open or closed, one in, one out. The KHB3K is a two-position, three-way valve: it can route flow between two paths or shut one off. If your machine needs to divert flow (for example a sample/test port, a bypass, or switching between two actuators) you need the three-way. If you only need to isolate a section of circuit, the two-way KHB is the right and cheaper choice.
We have had OEMs specify a three-way where a two-way would do, simply because they were unsure — that adds cost and a second sealing plane that can leak. Match the valve to the routing need, not to habit.

Why SAE J518C flanges beat threaded connections in heavy equipment
On larger ports, a four-bolt flange is far more robust than a threaded joint. Threads in high-vibration mobile equipment can work loose or gall; a flange with captive bolts and a face seal stays put and is easier to torque consistently during assembly. Smaller lines can use threaded ports, but the moment you are above roughly 3/4 inch in a vibrating environment, the flange interface pays for itself in reliability. This is the same reasoning behind our threaded-vs-flange ball valve comparison.
Pressure rating is not one number
The KHB rating steps down as the bore grows: the smallest sizes hold 500 bar, mid sizes drop to 400 bar, and the largest to 315 bar. Buyers frequently quote "500 bar" and then order a 2-inch valve — which is not 500 bar. Always read the rating at your actual DN.
Seal materials and media
The ball seal is typically POM (acetal) for wear resistance against frequent open/close, with NBR as the dynamic stem and joint seal, compatible with hydraulic oil, lubricant and water-glycol. If your media is aggressive (phosphate ester, chemicals, or flammable gas), the seal set needs verification — do not assume the standard NBR/POM package fits.

Where these valves actually go
- Excavators and loaders: circuit isolation, auxiliary function shut-off.
- Tractors and agricultural OEMs: carbon-steel KHB is the common spec because cost and strength beat stainless in a non-corrosive field environment.
- Mining trucks and drilling rigs: high-pressure sections, with corrosion treatment where dust and moisture are present.
- Industrial power units: switching and control of high-pressure lines in manufacturing plants.
Selection checklist
- Port type and size — flange (SAE J518C) or threaded (metric / G / NPT / SAE)?
- DN and pressure rating at that DN, not the headline number.
- Two-way or three-way (KHB vs KHB3K) based on routing need.
- Media and temperature — confirm seal compound.
- Environment — vibration (favor flange), corrosion (surface treatment or stainless).
- Handle or actuator — manual lever vs remote where access is poor.
Common mistakes
- Specifying 500 bar across all sizes.
- Using a threaded joint on a large vibrating line.
- Assuming the standard seal fits a non-oil medium.
- Choosing a three-way when a two-way suffices.
FAQ
Can a KHB replace a standard shut-off valve in my hydraulic power unit? In most cases yes, provided the port interface and DN match and the pressure is within the size's rating. The full-bore design actually reduces the pressure drop you would get with a restricted globe or needle valve.
Is the KHB3K suitable as a flow diverter? Yes — that is its purpose. The three-way, two-position design routes between two paths or isolates one, which is what makes it useful for test ports and bypass circuits.
Do these valves handle natural gas or flammable media? The standard seal set is not automatically qualified for flammable gas. It can be evaluated case by case with a verified seal and possibly special provisions. [NEEDS CONFIRMATION: confirm any gas-qualified configuration and certification.]
Why do tractor OEMs prefer carbon steel KHB? In a field environment without corrosion exposure, carbon steel gives the required strength at lower cost than stainless, and the application does not need stainless corrosion resistance.
