ISO 16028 and ISO 7241, Hydraulic Coupler Standards, Plane Couplers, Universal Couplers
When dealing with hydraulic systems, choosing the wrong quick-action coupling can range from incompatibility to serious leaks, system contamination, and safety hazards. As a global supplier, Hejian Honglun Hydraulic Components Co., Ltd. understands the necessity for our products to meet various standards.
When choosing a standard, the two most common ones you will encounter are Iso 16028 and ISO 7241. At first glance, they may seem similar, but these two standards are designed for completely different applications. This guide will explain the differences between them in detail so that you can make the right choice.
ISO 7241 (specifically ISO 7241-1) defines the dimensions and requirements for “universal” quick-action couplings.
Design Aspects: In industrial applications, you will often see “Type A” or “Type B” couplings. It features a piston valve mechanism that opens upon connection.
Pressure range: Generally used in systems operating at pressures between 20 MPa (200 bar) and 31.5 MPa (315 bar), but specific designs may vary.
Common applications: Agricultural machinery, construction equipment (excavators, loaders), general factory automation.
Most important consideration: ISO 7241 connectors are versatile and suitable for routine tasks, but slight dripping may occur during connection/disconnection, making them less suitable for environmentally sensitive areas.
ISO 16028 specifies the standard for “flat face valve connectors.”
Design: As the name suggests, its male and female connectors have a flat face interface. The valve is retracted into the body, meaning there are no protruding pins.
Advantages: Leak-free connection. Due to the flat face design, these connectors prevent liquid leakage and air lock-in when disconnected.
Pressure Range: Designed for high-pressure applications.
Common Applications: High-pressure testing equipment, marine and offshore equipment, applications requiring zero fluid leakage (e.g., expensive oils or coolants).
Most Important Considerations: In modern systems, especially where environmental compliance and system cleanliness are critical, ISO 16028 connectors are generally preferred.
| Feature | ISO 7241 (General Type) | ISO 16028 (Flat-Face Type) |
|---|---|---|
| Interface Design | Protruding male stud | Flat face, recessed valve |
| Spillage | Minor spillage possible | Spill-free (Zero loss) |
| Air Ingress | Possible during connection | Minimal air ingestion |
| Best For | General maintenance, agriculture | High-pressure, clean systems |
How to Choose?
If you need a cost-effective and robust standard hydraulic piping solution and tolerate minor leaks during switchovers, choose ISO 7241.
If you need drip-free connections and more efficient system pressure maintenance, choose ISO 16028.
Equally important, performance testing is governed by standards such as ISO 18869. This standard outlines testing methods for leakage, coupling force, and pressure drop. When sourcing fittings, ensure your supplier conducts reliability testing according to these standards.
