Threaded Hydraulic Coupling vs. Quick Connect Coupling: Key Differences Explained
In the selection of the hydraulic quick coupling, the connection type is more important it seems. Threaded hydraulic couplings, and Quick Connect Couplings, are common and popular products in the field of hydraulic, but their usage for work conditions is totally different.
Threaded connections may be the better choice for high-pressure, residual pressure, vibration, or heavy-duty applications, as they tend to provide a more secure connection. In applications where operators connect and disconnect lines on a frequent basis, a traditional Quick Connect Fitting can be a time saver.
Threaded Hydraulic Coupling: Designed for High-Pressure Applications
A threaded hydraulic coupling uses a sleeve locking mechanism. The male and female halves are manually threaded together, creating a firm connection that is suitable for demanding hydraulic applications.
Our VEP threaded hydraulic quick couplings are designed for equipment such as excavators, drilling machines, cranes, oilfield equipment and other high-pressure hydraulic systems. The special nipple design allows connection and disconnection under high residual pressure, which can be useful when completely relieving system pressure is not practical.
The VEP series also uses flush valving to help reduce fluid loss during disconnection and air inclusion during reconnection. An anti-blowout bonded seal is included for severe working conditions, while the chrome-plated surface provides improved corrosion resistance.
Quick Connect Coupling: Faster Connection for Routine Work

A quick connect coupling is generally selected when speed and convenience are the main priorities. Operators can connect hydraulic lines quickly without spending much time on the coupling process.
This makes quick connect designs practical for equipment that requires frequent hose changes or regular maintenance. However, the actual pressure rating, locking method and connection structure need to be checked before selecting a coupling for a specific system.
What About 700 Bar and Burst Pressure?
Working pressure and burst pressure are two different specifications and should not be treated as the same thing.
For instance, the VEP series has various pressure ratings for different sizes. The 12.5 mm is rated 550 bar, whereas the 40 mm Type is designed for a maximum working pressure of 400 bar and the minimum burst pressure is 1,100 bar. The 50 mm is rated at 350 bar with a minimum burst pressure of 1,100 bar.
So, when searching for a hydraulic coupling 700 bar or comparing hydraulic coupling burst pressure, always check the specific size and technical data instead of judging the coupling only by its name.
Choosing the Right Hydraulic Coupling
There is no single coupling design for every hydraulic system. The right choice depends on working pressure, residual pressure, connection frequency, flow requirements and operating conditions.
Hejian Honglun Hydraulic Parts Co., Ltd. has been manufacturing hydraulic quick couplings since 2010. Our couplings are produced according to standards including ISO 7241-1 Series A/B, ISO 5675 and ISO 16028, with products supplied to customers in more than 30 countries.
