What Thread Type Do European Hydraulic Machines Use, BSPP or BSPT?

2026-07-02

If you’ve ever ordered hydraulic Quick Couplings for European equipment, you’ve probably asked yourself this question at least once. And if you haven’t, trust me — you will.

Let’s cut through the confusion.

The Short Answer

BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel) is the dominant thread type on European hydraulic machines. You’ll see it labeled as G thread in technical drawings and parts manuals. BSPT (British Standard Pipe Tapered), on the other hand, is more commonly found in Asian markets like China and Japan.

But here’s the thing — knowing which one is “more common” doesn’t help you if your specific machine uses the other. So let’s dig a little deeper.

BSPP vs BSPT: What’s the Actual Difference?

The names tell you most of what you need to know.

BSPP threads are straight — the diameter stays constant from start to finish. Because parallel threads can’t seal on their own, BSPP fittings rely on an O-ring or gasket to create a leak-proof seal.
BSPT threads are tapered — they get narrower toward the end, like a cone. The seal is formed by the threads themselves as they’re tightened together, though sealant is still recommended for reliable connections.
And no, they’re not interchangeable. Screwing a BSPP male into a BSPT female might physically go together, but it won’t seal correctly, and over time it’ll damage the threads.

Why Does This Matter for Quick Couplings?

Because getting the thread wrong means leaks, downtime, and unnecessary costs.

When you’re speccing hydraulic quick couplings for European machinery, you need to know exactly what thread your ports use. Check your machine’s parts manual or the component manufacturer’s data sheet — they’ll specify BSPP (G thread) explicitly if that’s what’s required.

At Hejian Honglun Hydraulic Parts Co., Ltd., we’ve been manufacturing hydraulic and pneumatic quick couplings since 2010. Our HL brand quick couplings are available in both BSPP and BSPTthread options, along with NPT, SAE, and other standards. We manufacture to ISO 7241-1 Series A, ISO 7241-1 Series B, Iso 5675, ISO 16028, and Chinese standards — and our products interchange with major brands like Parker, Faster, Aeroquip, Hansen, Nitto, Foster, Cejn, and Rectus.

Our couplings are used everywhere from construction equipment and agricultural machinery to oil and gas, shipbuilding, military equipment, automotive, aviation, food processing, and chemical industry applications. We export to more than 30 countries including the US, UK, Spain, Germany, Poland, Italy, Russia, and across Southeast Asia, with 20+ sales branches across China.

The Bottom Line

If you’re buying for European equipment, BSPP is usually the safe bet. But always — always — confirm the thread type on your specific machine before ordering.

And if you’re not sure? Send us a photo of your current fitting or your port, and we’ll help you identify it. That’s what we do.
